Katydid's first quilt!

Laura from Katydid's is a multi talented lady.  Today we're featuring her very first quilt.  She enjoys a variety of creative projects, like home decor, embroidered gnome napkins, drink charms and even housekeeping tips!  Let's give Laura a big welcome the quilting world!

When I was approached by Heather and Megan to tell a Quilt Story, I knew I had to share the experience of making my first quilt.  I am a completely self-taught sewer and only dusted off an old sewing machine about 3 years ago.  I never thought I would ever quilt.  I’ll admit it.  I was biased.  I didn’t think quilting would fit my style.  I like modern, bright colors and clean lines.  And I thought quilts only fit in with country décor.  (Not that there’s anything wrong with country style, it just wasn’t for me!)  Plus…it looked really, really hard to do!

Then I started reading Jane Brocket’s wonderful book, The Gentle Art of Domesticity.  She’s a renegade, modern quilter and, as I read her story, I began to get the quilting itch.  Before I knew it, I was enrolled in a beginner’s quilting class.  The class was wonderful and in one month, I walked away with my first finished baby quilt. The pattern is called Winning Hand and I used Heather Bailey and other fun fabrics in it.   The class not only taught me quilting, but really improved my sewing skills and my eye for pattern and color.  Since I created my first quilt two years ago, I’ve made three others.  All small sized.  I’m currently trying to get the courage to make a twin sized quilt.  And hand quilt it!  I’ve only machine-quilted and “stitched in the ditch” and I know I’m missing out on a key part of quilting.  Come and visit me on my blog and see what I’m up to.  You never know there may just be entry in the near future, when I show-off my first twin-sized quilt!
