I'm very excited and honored about today's post!! I (Megan) had the opportunity to be a contributor in Martingale's new book Modern Quilts from the Blogging Universe. It was such a fabulous experience!!!
There are so many amazing designers in this book I was humbled to be asked to participate. So many that I look up to! One of my favorite things about this book is that they left it up to each designer to interpret modern quilting. Some really fun and unique quilt designs.
That is mine...yay! I haven't seen this quilt in a while, it will be fun to get it back :) Here are a couple more of my favorites.
You can check the whole book out here.
Martingale is offering an e-book giveaway!!
Hooray! Please leave a comment telling me what "modern quilting" means to you!
Each designer is offering the giveaway today so please stop by their blogs to enter as well! Found here.
This giveaway is now CLOSED

For those of you visiting welcome!! Tuesday's at Quilt Story is
Fabric Tuesday
We share our recent fabric projects. Please look around and link up projects of your own!
Modern quilting to me means lots of colour and lots of open space!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a tricky question to answer because *Modern* quilting is so diverse.
ReplyDeleteI think it's mostly the wonderful modern fabrics used in the right way.
Modern quilting seems to be a really nice use of negative space. I think it helps to let the fabric shine and means the piecing that you do is more a feature.
ReplyDelete(Congrats on getting published! THis book is on my birthday gift list :-])
E
To me modern quilting is bright & bold fabrics, lots of solids & negative space. Your quilt is gorgeous & the book looks fantastic, thanks for the chance to win a copy.
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt and thanks for the sneak peek of others. Modern Quilting for me is new takes (be it fabric, reinterpretation of blocks or techniques, etc.) on traditional quilting.
ReplyDeleteFirstly congratulations! What an honour and how exciting!
ReplyDeleteModern quilting means .... Hmmm, what does it mean to me? It's a fresh way of looking at traditional patterns, it's new blocks that haven't been done before that may themselves become traditional one day, it's bright and clean and unfussy. It's old skills used in a new way. It's my kind of thing even though I'm "old" and grey!
Congratulations on the book! Modern Quilting to means the permission to color outside of the lines.
ReplyDeleteModern quilting means making things that please you without being constrained by rules. I like the Modern Quilting emphasis on simple, clean lines.
ReplyDeleteVery cool! Congratulations. It looks like a really great book!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteI think modern quilting is about bold colours and negative spaces!
I guess its mostly about original use of color and space and not conforming to traditional design.
ReplyDeleteModern quilting: stretching traditional design beyond original boundaries.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what it is but I really like it!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on being published and with such a beautiful quilt! How neat to be able to share this with us...because each week I love coming here and seeing what other quilters are working on. Modern quilting, I think, is only that it' happening in the now...each of us rediscovering a passion our ancestors relied on and enjoyed. Making the passion ours and sharing it with others!
ReplyDeleteHuzzah!
Congratulations on the book! I LOVE your quilt submitted to it!
ReplyDeleteTO me, modern quilting is about playing with colors, shapes, and design in a way that is distinct and separate from traditional quilting. I love that it makes quilters think outside the box!
Modern quilting to me is just another way to play with more fabric and designs.
ReplyDeletemodern quilting is a mystery to me. I assume it means clean lines and a minimalistic approach usually with open (solid) areas
ReplyDeleteFor me modern quilting is being creative and not constrained by rules
ReplyDeleteModern Quilting to me involves intentional use of negative space as a design element.
ReplyDeleteYou can do what you want to do. Lots of free motion quilting, creative, bold colors, fun, unique, neat shapes, no rules. I love it!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to get a copy of this (e)book :) Thanks for the chance to win!
Modern quilting means freedom to create to me. Congratulations on the beautiful inspiring book.
ReplyDeleteI think of oversized graphics and lack of fussiness when I think of Modern Quilts. Also, brave color themes, unbridled energy.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!! I just ordered one from Barnes and Noble! Can't wait to get it!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Love your quilt! Modern quilting means freedom to use bright bold colors, crazy improv designs, lots of negative space, and fun quilting patterns.
ReplyDeleteMore solid fabrics and not always blocks, large strips, anything goes boldness. No boundaries, no worrying about the quilt police. Congratulations on being published!!!
ReplyDeleteSuch a hard question! I think for me, modern quilting is being unexpected with regards to fabric choices, patterns, and even techniques. A quilt can have some or all of those qualities to be considered modern to me.
ReplyDeletebold bright colors on a nutural background.
ReplyDeleteModern quilting means a lot of things, it can be lots of solids, negative spaces, simple quilting, and/or mod prints on a traditional layout, etc. I love it all. :)
ReplyDeleteFor me modern quilting is more about the fabric. It's bright and homey and not necessarily the floral hand dyed colors of the past (although I love me some civil war quilts!) I heard the term "modern traditionalist" and I love that - keeping the traditions of quilting with modern twists to make them fit perfectly into my life today
ReplyDeleteModern quilting to me means allowing myself the freedom to make quilts that express me ... Pat
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! It is a gorgeous quilt! Modern quilting is bold beautiful colors and the freedom to express yourself.

ReplyDeleteModern quilting is doing your own thing and using every day inspiration to make something beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLove the rainbow hst! Beautiful! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of modern quilting, I think of bright fun colors that may or may not conform with "modern" patterns. I love bright and bold fabrics made into traditional blocks which I think gives it a completely modern appeal.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteTo me, modern quilting has to do a lot with color and placement. It doesn't always have to be full of negative space, but it gives you a chance to take a look at something from a different point of view.
Congrats. To me it represents a challenge because I am just getting in to it.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you like a gray background! :)
ReplyDeleteTo me, modern quilting has much to do with the fabric: high saturations, modern patterns, using solids--especially neutral backgrounds. But this is just me--I still tend to favor traditional quilt patterns, I just like them done with more modern fabric. I know many other quilters like to loosen up the designs of quilts as well.
Modern quilting for me means bright colors and lots of open space.
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt! To me modern quilting is about using bright, fresh fabrics and often solids to give a very different look to traditional quilt blocks.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Modern quilting means bright colors of tradition patterns, use of solids, improv piecing, more negative space...there is lots of aspects to modern quilting! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the book! Yours is such a lovely quilt!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations.
ReplyDeleteI am not certain that I can sum up what a modern quilt is as it encompasses so much more than fabric choice and pattern choice.
BUT, I know a modern quilt when I see one!
Gorgeous quilts! When I think of "modern quilting," I think of a lot of negative space, improv, etc. I like to think of myself as "modern," but maybe I am more "contemporary" with my color choices and blocks.
ReplyDeleteTo me modern quilting is bright and bold fabrics, traditional methods but with a twist and negative space.
ReplyDeleteTo me, modern quilting is about bright colors, whether solids or prints with lots of negative space in either neutral or bold colors
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Modern quilting to me means unique ideas with lots of negative space. :)
ReplyDeleteTo me, modern quilting is more about connecting with a younger generation of quilting that is interested in new designs and fabrics. I think it's less about certain styles or techniques (i.e. negative space, improve piecing) and more about the emergence of a new generation of quilters.
ReplyDeleteModern quilting means doing what ever you can dream up and sewing it into a quilt! Thanks for the giveaway, it is a great book full of inspiration!

ReplyDeleteI think part of modern quilting is to think a bit outside of the box - whether in fabric choice, color, design...

ReplyDeleteModern quilting to me is hard to describe!! Bright, saturated colours, negative space, and and and.. so hard to describe! Thanks for the chance!!
ReplyDeleteTo me, Modern Quilting is bright colors and clean lines. I don't know if that is what it is or not, but that is what I see when I look at a Modern Quilt.
ReplyDeleteModern quilting to me is less traditional with fun bright fabrics instead of the "old lady" style.
ReplyDeleteMy definition of modern quilting is more solids, clear brighter colors and much more negative space. Congratulations on having your quilt published!
ReplyDeletethe thing i love about this book is quite a few of my fave bloggers are in it which makes you feel kind of like you "know" the authors
ReplyDeletemodern quilting, in my mind, is quilting with modern fabrics and possibly the addition of textural elements... oh and you use a rotary cutter :)
To me, modern quilting is not being constrained by traditional designs or color schemes--more imaginative, more negative space, bold color!

ReplyDeleteFor me, modern quilting involves using old designs in new ways. A traditional quilt block becomes fresh and new by using bright colors or by being wonky or even by being made with string-pieced fabric. Taking just a few of those traditional blocks and scattering them randomly on a solid background is another way to be modern.
ReplyDeleteModern quilting is lots of negative space.

ReplyDeleteI think modern quilting just means a new take on what already exists - perhaps more solid colours or geometric prints. But, really, nothing is actually "new" except for the interpretation.
ReplyDeleteI love the bright colors and seeing old blocks/patterns in a new perspective.
ReplyDeleteModern quilting - taking old ideas and revamping them. I also think its the use of colors that defines a modern quilt.
