How great of an idea is this??? Jen dedicated her book to her husband, still active in the military. She has worked with military uniforms for quite a few friends and clients (check out this gallery) and put a lot of her ideas into one book. I got the opportunity to review Deploy that Fabric and it is clear, great instructions, diagrams and projects that I'm excited about!! I think it would make a great gift too. Here are a couple of my favorite projects from the book.
Stockings would be so precious! And if you don't know someone in the military I think there are a lot of ways you could use these patterns, for fun or for other materials with a lot of meaning.

Has anyone you've known or loved served in the military? Or you? Both of our grandfather's served in WWII and now I'd like to find out if their uniforms are still around somewhere :) In fact when our grandfather left England our grandma was pregnant with their first child. He served all over Europe and returned five years later. He didn't meet his own son until he was five, how crazy is that? My grandma says they stayed up all night talking and it was like a whole new person and marriage. They were happy and in love until his passing more than 20 years ago. Hearing her tell stories of the war in England are unreal like when she was running through an alley because bombs were falling through the sky...definitely puts life into perspective.
Thank you to all who have and will serve us in our armed forces. We are truly grateful.

My son is just returning from a year long deployment in Afghanistan with his combat engineer unit. They're the bomb squad, sweeping the roads for mines. My son drove a Husky, a one-man, armored vehicle with ground penetration radar; the first one in line. Can't tell you what a relief to my heart when he finally called last week to say, "Momma, I'm OK," and that they'd landed on American soil. (Happy tears!) A couple more weeks of de-mobilization, and I can wrap my arms around my boy. Can't be soon enough!
ReplyDeleteMy Father was in WWII and my brother was born during the war in 1942, my Dad didn't see him for a few years. I don't think we can imagine what it must have been like. My Mum use to tell me stories when the sirens went she would pick up my brother and run down into the cellar. If my brother had a sweet he use to take a small piece and put it on a picture of Dad and say "some for Daddy" War is such a terrible thing, it destroys so many lives, how I wish we could have a World without it. ReplyDeleteMy brother was in the Army in the 1970's and my dad was in the Navy in WWII. I just recently had what I thought was an original idea and made a donation quilt for my quilting group to give to a family support group at the local military base. It was made out of cut up camo pants and some of my blue and green batiks in a Disappearing 4 Patch design.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was serving in the U.S. Navy I met a wonderful man who was also serving in the Navy. I got out of the Navy after a few years but DH stayed in and retired. Now our DS is serving in the U.S. Navy.. we are so very proud of him!!

ReplyDeleteMy father served in the Army in Vietnam. Has a great big scar across his chest to prove it, where a bullet missed his lungs, hearts, and God saved his life! I'm so glad He did!

ReplyDeleteThis is such a great book! My DH is a Marine and my father was in the Air Force. My DD is considering the Marines as a career, also. She likes to dress up her hunting camis with ribbon and bandana fabric...LOL! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to in the book and bag. I just found out not too long ago that most of the members of my family in my father's generation served in the Marines. It was a treat last year to then go to the Marine Corp. museum in Quantico, VA and view the history of that branch of the service.

ReplyDeleteI served in the Army for eight years - three years active duty and five years in the Reserves. Both my brother and sister were also in the Army - my brother retired after 22 years. I never thought about using my old uniforms for a quilt - I still have all of them!
ReplyDeleteMy dad was in the Navy, my father-in-law and my husband served in the Army and my nephew served in the Air Force. We also have relatives that served in the Civil War.

ReplyDeleteMy dad was a pilot in the old Army Air Corps, which became the Air Force. He was stationed in Panama when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Since he was from Hi, he wanted to come back here, but was sent to Italy instead, where he served most of the war. My brother was born in Panama during that time and eventually became an Air Force pilot himself, serving in VietNam.

Our son just graduated from USMC bootcamp this summer and is in Camp Pendleton. I asked him to send me his old cammies and he laughed, "What do you want those old things for Mom?" "I've got a long list of projects Bud." This book is a wonderful idea. I'm very gratefull for the men and women and families who serve this country. Thank you!

ReplyDeleteMy Dad was in WWII the Bataan Death March and a POW for 3 1/2 years. Both of my brothers were in the Navy with the oldest a Jet pilot that served in Veitnam.

My father was in the Navy. His ship was hit, but not sunk when I was a child. I remember living in a Quanset Hut on the base, visiting my dad, while his ship was in dry dock being repaired. I also have a son-in-law who served in Kuwait as support to those in Iraq. We love our service men and women!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo awesome! My hubby was a chemical officer in the National Guard. His work as a defense contractor sent him overseas as well. My brother is in the Guard, both my parents were in the Navy, several grandparents served, too.
ReplyDeleteMy dad and FIL both served in the Army. Now one of my brothers is in the Army. Another one of my brothers is in the Navy (currently serving in Afghanistan). In April he married a wonderful girl (also in the Navy) and 5 days later was shipped out. So sad and we miss him. He won't be back until March.

My grandfather taught me the meaning of patriotism and service to country at an early age. He fought in both the Spanish American War and WWI. Many relatives have served and are serving in the military, and this book seems to be good for using any type of uniform to make something special.

ReplyDeleteI loved that story about your grandma. It made me tear up a bit. My husband is in the Us Army. I am so grateful that they have deployment limits now. I don't know what I would do if he left for 5 years. Can you even imagine that at all? Not to see your spouse and best friend for 5 years. I doubt they were able to even write that often.
He has deployed twice and he has another coming up next year. Thanks for hosting such a cool book giveaway and for sharing your story. It means a lot to wives like me that stay home and fight our own battles here!
My cousin Tom was in the Australian Army for more than 25 years & served overseas on a few occasions, once as part of a training program in Afghanistan. Having a family member or a friend in the armed forces makes war & conflict & service more personal & real. I love the idea of this book, it looks fantastic. Thanks for a great giveaway.

ReplyDeleteMy mother was born in France, she was 16 years old when the Nazi came into Paris. She still remembers the joy, the hope of seeing the US miltary tanks rolling onto Paris to free them. She is forever grateful to the United States Miltary. She always prayed for the soliders who lost there life saving her. She taughts to be grateful for our great miltary.

My grandmother was a WAC in WWII (and outranked my grandfather!), and her uniform is being held for me until I have a safe place to put it. But there's no way that one's getting cut up, no matter how neat the projects!
