I came across th is super cute project from Jolene of Blue Elephant Stitches, she made these as a Christmas gift! Seriously can I be her friend? I LOVE these darling place mats, but lets all be honest, nobody will ever use these as place mats, they are just too darling! Make sure to check her blog out, lots of fun projects, great photos, lots of inspiration!
I'm not just the hugest fan of Christmas. Somehow, the idea in my head of how the season should be, and how it really is, just gets me down a bit... BUT, the one thing I love about Christmas is making gifts. (which of course just adds to the sTreSs)
So, my mom had mentioned awhile back that she'd like a few placemats. If anyone ever mentions something they'd like me to make, it immediately gets stored away in my brain, in a little file called "Things I Need/Want to Make for ______" So if you secretly roll your eyes at homemade gifts and sewn stuff, just don't mention anything, and you'll probably get a gift card or some pretties from the store. And if you've hinted about something you'd like me to make, and you haven't received it yet, don't worry, it's still on my list. Unless I've forgotten, which happens verrrry rarely ;)
Getting back on topic here, my mom mentioned placemats: and here they are.
All seven of them, which seems odd I know. But that's where I ran out of time. I think I might make a few more sometime, since these were rather fun to build.
I don't always know what my mom will like, but I know that she LOVES dolls. So I bought a fat quarter of Babushka doll fabric, and used it as color inspiration. I also put a bit of this fabric into each placemat.
And since I hate getting bored, I decided to make each placemat different, so here's where we get a bunch of photos.
And yes, our Christmas was a bit early, I gave them to her yesterday. So I'm not spoiling any surprises.
I had so much fun making these. The end.

Super cute placemats! I especially like the dresden plate one!
How lovely! It would be impossibly stressful to use those for actual eating! I would be terrified of ruining them!
Beautiful! We're moving soon and I really should make some pretty placemats like this for the new house (although with a 2-1/2 and 4-year-old, I'm not sure if it's safe to use them). :-)
Love these! I especially love how they're all different.
These are darling!! And I especially like how you made them all so unique... really like mini quilts! Thank you for the reminder that it's ok to break the rules (not all the placesmats have to be matchy matchy)!
Love the variety! Artwork on your dining room table!
These are all so fabulous! Such a great idea to use all the different patterns!
I love these! How fun to have a set of tiny little quilts for your table! I might have to do some of these for my own table. I'm so selfish! :)
p.s. I would love details on where you got that Babushka doll fabric! My mother-in-law lived in Russia for a few years and would love it!
i love that all of these are different...they are so pretty
They are all so pretty! I love the dolls and fabric! Even more so that they are all different but match so beautifully :)
Thanks for sharing!
hugs, margie
Thanks for posting this, Heather and Megan! I follow Jolene's blog, but I got so bogged down over the holidays I had to just hit "mark all as read" in my google reader and start from scratch.
I do the same thing with gifts, and my mom is not shy about making suggestions! The next gift she gets from me will be a matching set of placemats, coasters and napkins. I am in love with the dresden plate placemat — the center is just precious!
