Triangle quilt and a room redo...

Sorry about the camera phone photos, these smart phones take such good photos, that I have been neglecting my nice camera. Anyhow, I have been redoing my daughters room. We are doing soft mint, ballet slipper pink, soft tones and gold...

After walls were painted, I started painting items for her room, and sewing bedding. First is this triangle quilt pillow. I used this tutorial I found on Pinterest. Pretty easy, the triangles were easier than I anticipated. 

I quilted the sham with just a quarter inch around each seam. Simple and nice.

 I made this sheepie a while ago. I love her. One of the favorite things I have ever made. And I had my husband make me this little wooden house. I used this pretty Brambleberry Ridge fabric from Michael Miller as wallpaper. (the same fabric line in the pillows)

What makes me happiest about this room is how much me and my daughter created for it. We painted the walls together, and everything on this wall is made by us except the flying bunny. (and frames) I painted all the art, and me and my daughter did the embroidery projects. 

 Then I was on a roll, so I decided to make a "quilt as you go" pillow. I loved making this pillow. Fast cute fun project....

We still have a few more plans, but I am really happy with everything so far!

T-shirt Dress Tutorial!

Last week I whipped up a T-shirt dress for my little lady.  They are sooo easy and perfect to use for an old t-shirt or a plain one on clearance (like me) :)

Simple, fun little play dress!  Want to make one too?? Let's get started!

Supplies:

T-shirt

1 print 4" x WOF (width of fabric, about 42")

1 print 5" by WOF

Optional tulle 5.25" wide

**Keep in mind the longer the WOF (42") the fuller the gather with the skirt.  My t-shirt size is 18-24 months.  If you're using a larger t-shirt you may consider increasing the length.

Cut each piece as listed above in supplies.  Join ends to make a continuous circle, stitch and press.  Turn and iron the hem under once and again for a finished edge to the hem.  Stitch around.  I turned a little more than 1/4 inch each time about 5/8" total.  (For the tulle all you need to do is stitch it in a continuous circle, no need to finish the hem)

Place all three pieces inside each other (like above).  Stitch around the piece to secure them all together.  If you have a serger, awesome, if not use a zig-zag like me.  This will help with fraying as the garment is washed and worn. 

Gather.  Do the longest stitch your machine will allow.  Stitch around the top of the skirt.  Leave a lot of thread before you start to stitch and when you finish the stitch.  Taking one thread at a time slowly pull and the garment will gather.  Take your time, if you break the thread you'll have to stitch the whole thing again.  Pull from each side.  Match the gathered skirt to the size of the t-shirt.

Place the skirt inside the shirt.  Pin all around.  Sew together!

I did cut her a coordinating headband, I could resist!!

I cut it on the bias (so it has stretch).  Finished the edges and tied it directly on her head.  Because of the stretch it stays on well and can easily be pulled off and on (keeping the knot in place).

Ta-da!! Really easy sweet little play dress for the little lady!

Heather's Block of the Month Sampler quilt finish...

Yesterday you saw Megan's finish. Today is my Block of the Month finish. Megan and I fought over that lovely stack of Backyard Baby for our Block of the Month. She won in the end because of her two boys, and wanting to make them quilts for their beds. I was bummed out until I saw my stack of lovely fabric. Ooh La La by pillow and Maxfield. How could these bright colors not make anyone happy???

Here is my finished quilt...

You can see a bit of the quilting, our Aunt Wendy quilts a lot of our quilts. This was just a large swirl design. Sweet.

The weather was behaving quilt nicely. Since it was overcast, I was able to get the beautiful Utah mountains and my quilt exposed properly! I loved how the photos turned out.  

This awesome fence was just off the side of the road. Ended up being a perfect rustic setting. You may see more photos here!

Sorry for the quilt interruption .., one of my helpers. I tend to be a little ADD with my hobbies. That goes with photography, and photography of the kids! I know! I am a horrible mother. I LOVE candid sweet children's photographs. I am going to try to do better this year. These babies of mine are growing up too fast!! Isn't she sweet? (At least she still  has yummy cheeks to kiss!)

Sampler Chain Quilt Finish and Fab Tues!

I did it!!  My Block of the Month quilt is entirely finished.  And it makes me really really happy :)  It all started with this lovely stack of Backyard Baby fabrics:

And here it is, quilted, bound and ready to be snuggled with.

Our series was for a year, a block each month with a theme right?  Ie star, hst, pinwheel, etc..  I decided that I wanted to make my quilt a twin, so in the end I doubled the amount of squares and did 12 nine patches to make it a Chain Sampler quilt.  Each square is 15" finished.  It is 68" x 90". 

 

My aunt did the quilting, this was too big for me and not even the time to consider it on my limited machine!  She did wavy lines to show the chains better, stippling throughout the blocks and then each sampler block she did some great custom quilting.  On all of the blocks with trees she'd follow the shape of the tree.  I love how she did it!

I backed it with gray minky and the orange print seemed perfect for the binding.  I actually almost wish I'd used orange in each block, or used it more.

There you have it!  Soon one of my boys will have this on their new extra big boy beds.  Now I'm going to lay under it and watch New Girl. I'm done for the night :)

Yum- Textured Basics!

From time to time Heather and I get some yummy fabrics to share and we love this latest collection from Michael Miller, Textured Basics by Patty Young.

They had me at rainbow.

I love bright and happy fabrics and I've finally gotten Heather onto my side.  But not only does this look adorable on top of my fabric shelf...BUT they are an awesome stash builder.  Seriously, I'm even missing some in the picture because I couldn't wait to cut into them.  I had some pictures of these prints with various projects but somewhere between my camera and the computer they were eaten up.  What can you do...

Each colorway has the same prints... hexies, stripes, dots, etc.  I just spied some Textured Basics at my LQS the other day...

What are your basic go-to's in your stashes?

Mine are definitely dots!

Fabric: Backyard Baby from Michael Miller

Simple. Hopefully dynamic enough :)  I feel like with this a sampler quilt these blocks are called for to keep it not too "crazy".  Plus I love those aspens.

Hooray!! I can't believe it's been 12 months.  This totally shows you how working on a project a little at a time pays off.  Had we not started this series there is no H or I would have completed an extra quilt on the side.

So I finally decided how I will finish mine.  It's going to be huge, I'm making it a twin quilt!  We're getting our boys (ages 4 and 5) new beds this summer...it's about time they're both in toddler beds!  But when you're in medical school things don't happen as fast.  Anyway I'm quite excited to get them big beds and decorating their room.

I've already added borders to make each block below 15.5" square.  Then I'm working on 12 chain blocks, so it will be an Irish Chain Sampler Quilt!  I hope it turns out as cute as it is in my head!!

Own, disappearing 4 patch

Fabric: Ooh La La from Michael Miller

For my four patch I followed a simple disappearing 4 patch tutorial online. (sorry can't find the link...) Then I was a bit short because I am horrible at basic math, so I added the pink border. But I love it!

These fabrics are so bright and cheery and make me want spring oh so much!

Here are my blocks. I am not quite sure what to do to finish it off. Any ideas? I think I like white for sashing, just makes the bright colors pop.  Then I am not sure of much else. I will get it together soon.

Meg was right, there is no way on the planet we would have done this on the side when you consider our crazy year. It is fun and nice to see what a little at a time can add up to. (A lesson that I have a hard time grasping. )

That year went fast, seems like only yesterday I was swooning over the fabrics!

Makes me want to do another sort of series to make me do it!!!???
