Embroidered Quilt Label Tutorial

I am getting better at labeling my quilts, I'm pretty excited about that!  So many quilts Heather and I do are not necessarily for anyone in particular and often hang in shops...but the more quilts I've been making for family and friends I've decided to make them more personal.

A lot of people use their own handwriting to label quilts and they look awesome.  I've been too scared to do it...I'm not confident enough in my own handwriting.  For my little boy Sawyer's 4th birthday this summer I decided to make him a quilt and my first embroidered quilt label.  Here's how I made mine:

Step 1
Type up (or write by hand) whatever you'd like your label to say.  I can rarely get through the children's book Love You Forever without crying, just reinforces my love for my little boys!!  (If you somehow do not know of this book you need to read it immediately!!  Children or not, if you're human you'll be touched!!)  I chose to use the lyrics from that book.  Remember to keep in mind the size of your block, I put a box around mine for reference (I use Photoshop).  I think it's important in a label to include the date and your name.

Step 2
Using a fabric pen (one that will wash out) copy the text onto your quilt block.

Step 3:
Put an embroidery hoop around the block.  Stitch the text using a simple backstitch.  Below is a step by step of how to do the stitch.  Click to enlarge.

Step 4:
Finished!  I've got extra lines in there to center it...

Here it is in the quilt!  It is on the back, a strip of blocks along with the quilt tag and I also appliqued his name.  I have a tutorial coming up showing how Heather and I like to applique.  Sorry to be so lame, I don't have a reveal of the quilt yet!  But hopefully by next month :)
I'll love you forever
I'll like you for always
As long as I'm living
My baby you'll be

Happy Birthday my sweet Sawyer
with love, mommy 6/2011

Other miscellaneous information:
I'd recommend using a piece larger than your block (while still keeping the embroidery in the right size).  You have to consider the embroidery hoop, plus it's easier to work with and trim to size when finished.

I used DMC embroidery floss.

If you have any questions please ask in the comments and I'll respond there :)

As always if you use one of our tutorials and blog about it please give us credit! :)

oh i love it!
i about cried just reading the label - no way could i attempt to read that one to my kids. we have it somewhere, i'm sure.
now i want to make labels for the quilts i made my kids ... would it be lame to sew them on top, after the fact?

hmmm.

i can't wait to see the entire quilt!

I am thrilled that you include the label BEFORE the quilting of the quilt.

It always alarms me when I see quilters creating these beautiful labels and then appliqueing them to the finished quilt. Just a few quick snips and that label can be removed. :(

However, doing like it appears like you have, and including the label BEFORE the quilting would certainly give someone else pause before attempting to remove the label.

Blessings!

I gave each of my boys a copy of that book when they were born and tucked it into their album. I have never been able to make it through the whole thing! Thanks for the tutorial!

Oh that's fantastic! I *still* haven't labeled any of my quilts. Just like everything I think I'll always remember when and why I made it but I know that's not the case. Embroidery really gives it a super special touch! Good job.

That book is one of my favorites -- and reading it to my (now grown) children is a lovely memory. I hate to admit this, but just reading your post this morning made me a little weepy (happy tears). :)

Oh I'm right there with you Denise.
I read it to my two children when they were young(22 & 23 yr now)and it was so hard to make it through without crying. I give that book with my gift eveytime I go to a baby shower.

I have always embroidered my labels, however, I never thought of someone removing it. Thanks Ida for mentioning that. All my labels in the future will be quilted on.

What a great idea to celebrate your kid's birthday. I think that was a surprise to your little boy Sawyer. I like your idea and innovation. The first embroidered quilt label you showed us step by step was incredibly wonderful. I was really excited with those sweet loving and affectionate sentences. Actually I was looking for some great ideas about Custom Iron On Patches. But it was really an enjoyable tour here.

I was also so much excited getting me into your lovely blog post. The embroidered quilt story you stated in this post made me happy indeed. I could not but dived the sweet steps you followed to make the quilt gorgeous. Great job! The idea of using fabric pen was also very excellent. I was eager to learn how to iron on embroidered patches and scrolling my mouse pointer on the search page. My pleasure, I found your artistic post and oh OMG, you really made the quilting project so lovely and interesting. Of course love to leave my warm thanks for sharing such an useful project for your readers and fans especially quilt lovers. Anyway, just a few moment back I visited https://www.ultrapatches.com got some good ideas on embroidered, PVC, leather, woven, printed, jacket, sports, baseball, soccer, football, hockey, patches as my browsing interest was to get into embroidered patches. Maybe some patches addicts find this useful.
