Jelly Roll Jam 2 Free Pattern!

Another awesome free pattern from Fat Quarter Shop!!

It's called Jelly Roll Jam 2.  Needed is one Jelly Roll and it yields 2 baby quilts!!

Check out Fat Quarter Shop here for the pattern.  I've also embeded their YouTube video at the end of this post.

Us bloggers were encouraged to "make it our own".
Thankfully I had my sister Heather and my mom in town not only to help me whip it together (so fast) but also gave me the brilliant ruffle idea!!

To add ruffles to a Jelly Roll Jam 2 Quilt

-cut one jelly roll strip in half
-fold wrong sides together
-gather along the top edge to 12.5"
-create 6 total
-add ruffle between blocks

Sweet Ruffles a Quilt Tutorial from Meg!

Want to make one??
I received some of this mini ruffle in grey from the lovely Ruffle Fabric peeps so I could do a quilt tutorial for you!

Finished Quilt Size: 40.5" x 44.5"

Materials Needed:
  • 3/4 yards Ruffle Fabric
  • 1/2 yard of coordinating quilting cotton print
  • 1/8 yard of FIVE coordinating quilting cotton prints (each print needs to be exactly 4.5", so bump this up if your not confident in the cut.)

Tips for Ruffle Fabric:
  • Take time and care cutting ruffle fabric.  You'll need to separate the ruffles with each cut.  Also take care that the ruffles are hanging correctly when sewing.  To do this I recommend a lot of pinning!
  • Make sure when you cut your ruffles run horizontal.
  • Make sure your ruffles all hang in the same direction when assembling the quilt top.
  • Don't stretch!  This is a stretchy material and thankfully very forgiving.  However pin a lot and do your best not to stretch it as you sew, otherwise you'll cause your other prints to gather.
  • I had no problem ironing it, it didn't effect the ruffles at all. It also does not shrink if you like to pre-wash.

Step 1: Cutting
  • From ruffle fabric cut 5 strips 4.5" x 40.5".  The ruffle should run horizontal in the cut.
  • From coordinating prints cut 3 strips 4.5" x 40.5"
  • From five coordinating trim to 4.5" x WOF

Step 2: Creating the Squares Row

  • Sew the five strips together, top to bottom.  Press.  Refer to the picture below.
  • Sub-cut the prints to 4.5" strips and cut 6.
  • Sew end to end for 3 total strips.  Refer to second picture below.

Step 3: Layout
  • Lay all your strips on a flat surface.  Arrange in the following order, sew top to bottom and press:
    1. Squares Row
    2. Ruffle Row
    3. Solid Row
    4. Ruffle Row
    5. Squares Row
    6. Ruffle Row
    7. Solid Row
    8. Ruffle Row
    9. Squares Row
    10. Ruffle Row
    11. Solid Row

Step 4:  Quilting
I haven't quilted mine yet, obviously, but I will share when I do!  Here are a couple of my thoughts.  I plan to straight-line stitch on the cotton fabrics horizontally, maybe every inch.  I will stitch in the ditch above and below the ruffle fabric but DO NOT quilt on top of the ruffle fabric or you'll flatten it!  Sad!

This will mostly likely be for the little lady :) Two and a half weeks to go!!!  It's a great size for a play quilt on the floor, plus I think those tiny fingers will love the ruffles!

It is such a grown-up color palette which is making me smile!  I've done so many sweet things for her this was fun to be a little more dramatic.

I hope you like it!  It was so fun to make!! I have a couple more Ruffle Fabric projects I'll be sharing so stay tuned!

More GIRL and Fabric Tuesday #88

Because of Memorial Weekend I decided to announce the winner for our minky blanket giveaway from The Minky Boutique on Friday...so you've got a few more days if you didn't enter yet.  It is seriously such a sweet blanket you must take a minute to comment if you haven't :)

Next, if you didn't see my post on Friday where I had an announcement and shared some sweet little dresses (hint hint) I think you should!!  :)

It's Fabric Tuesday and I have more girly-ness to share...it's getting out of control and I can't stop myself. If I didn't need to use up all this fabric it would be a real problem. I go to sleep and wake up thinking of all the girl dresses/skirts/blankets/quilts that I want to make!!

I told my husband when I finished this last night that it may be the prettiest thing I've ever made.  I am smitten with this blanket!!!

The ruffles??  And birdies and roses and...I'm so loving this!  I got this fabric called Tweet from Skye Reve Fabrics a bit ago on a whim thinking "If I have a girl..." and I am so happy that I got it!  The fabric came just as we found out the baby is a girl :)  It is a great size, about 40" square.

Yep, backed in the snuggliest minky from my LQS.  I took a nap with it today.  Seriously. I made my husband snuggle it for a while too :)  This morning when I excitedly pointed it out to my 3 year old son, folded in a corner so you couldn't really see it, I said "Look at the cute blanket I made for the baby!" He took a quick glance and said, "I know already." Ha!  Boys really don't care about this stuff! That's why I have this blog right??

And then in the last week I busted out some skirts too, I'm trying to advance my clothing skills since I haven't sewn clothing much.  These were sooo simple.

Coral Floral: Lark by Amy Butler
Cream Floral (above) Red Bouquets (below): Millie's Closet for Riley Blake
Gray Circles: I'm pretty sure it's something like Metro Dots for Robert Kaufman...anyone?
I also got most of these from Skye Reve Farbics

Isn't the trim sweet?  I got it at my LQS, it's just ruffled tulle.  Okay now hold on to your coffee mug, or chair, or dag/cat.  I've got a little surprise.

SNAP!
Oh yes I did.  It's two skirts, they're reversible :) It was so cute to make these and my boys actually did think it was cool that the skirt could flip and change entirely :)  There you have it for now!!

Fabric Tuesday #88
What have you been crafting?  Clothing?  Quilts? Home decor?  Can't wait to see!!

Ruffle Quilt from Lilac Lane

Happy Monday everyone.  Quick little note, Heather posted her children's Easter dresses (made by her mil in gorgeous Bliss fabric) on our other blog Fresh Poppy Design, so check it out :)

Melissa from Lilac Lane is sharing a gorgeous quilt today, just check out this piecing!  A lot of the fabrics are from her daughter's clothing, so sweet.  Melissa is a pattern designer, fabric designer and a stay at home mommy.  Enjoy getting to know a little more about her and seeing such a pretty quilt!

A little about me: I'm a fabric and pattern designer and LOVE it! (patterns with QuiltWoman.com and fabric with _____ I can't say yet, but I'm bursting to tell! Maybe by Monday!) Technically, I'm also a pharmacist, although I don't practice much at all. And most of all, I'm a stay-at-home mommy. As far as what kind of quilter I am, I am certainly no perfectionist. I hate to rip! I took my first quilting class about 6 years ago. Before that I definitely quilted a lot, even since I was 10 years old, but I thought I knew what I was doing. LOL I learned a lot in those monthly classes, which I took for about 3 years and another one that lasted two years. Although I'm still no perfectionist, I've learned to do better the first time. Occasionally, I will rip out! But mostly I've learned techniques and shortcuts to make everything turn out better. I've been called the queen of making old look new. As in, I like to use old patterns and make them fresh with color, technique, and changing things up a bit. I'm very definitely a colorful person. I've just finished a quilt for McCalls Quick Quilts which has nine contrasting colors, and I've remarked that it may be the least I've ever put into a quilt. I love to make easy patterns that look difficult. Modern to me doesn't have to be just straight lines.

The Road to Redemption is finished! Those of you who have followed along for awhile remember this two year long quilt process. You can read all about it here. There are 33 small (6 inch) blocks and 12 large (12 inch) blocks. If you're wondering what took me so long, I added a ruffled border and was willing to wait for my ruffler foot to come in to do it. Was it worth it? Yes. But at times I felt like I would die at my machine before this quilt got finished.

Yes it really did snow here today.

Quilted by Lisa Sipes, who is nominated for a Golden Quilter award for Best Long-Arm Quilter.

This pillowcase was a Christmas present from my sweet friend Marie.
