I feel like my posts (Heather) have been slacking a bit around here. Summer was a bit nuts and I didn't get to sew much, therefore I didn't offer that much in way of posts. If you follow me on Instagram (Quiltstory) Megan is (Quiltstorymeg) you can see more of the day to day of my creations. But I do have a few blocks to show off...

 I like this block. Megan and I had Dalmatians growing up. Cookie, Penny and Trixie. And I have 2 beagles. So I like the beagle butt in the corner :)

I have more than I remembered done, but have a few I want to get to. I am using all Heather Ross charms. I was able to buy a Heather Ross charm pack from a friend on Instagram. It was a nice sampling of a lot of her fabrics. 

Who doesn't love the gnomes. Right?

Rainbow Wave Quilt from Busy Hands Quilts

I love color, bright colors, and thus I do love rainbow! Our feature today of Mrs. Hearts from Busy Hands Quilts is so happy and bright!! A darling quilt for her daughters joyful room! :)  I think I even have enough solids to make my own...hmmm.  Make sure to check out Busy Hands Quilts...she truly is busy!! Almost every post is a finish! My daughter's newly decorated room.  Don't you love the walls?!?  The other two walls are blue, which I may show you on another day.  That half of the room is ... not ... clean!!!  I had originally planned to make a Rainbow Plus Quilt on the top bunk {remember the 60 solids I purchased?}, but when Millie and I found this set at Kohl's for uber cheap, we couldn't pass it up.  It matches perfectly! The bottom quilt is a full-size Wave quilt with 18 different solids, made by yours truly.
It is LOVE ... or what!?!
It turned out truly AMAZING! The backing is a Riley Blake chevron in apple green and white, and oh, my, this fabric was a charm to work with!  WAY nicer than lesser quality flannels from other sources.  I washed and dried it once before assembling the quilt since flannel shrinks more than regular cotton fabrics and will shrink again when washed a second time.  The quilt top and binding were not preshrunk.
Here is a close-up of the candy binding.  YUM!  I quilted across the quilt twice in the colored areas, varying the height of the "swoops" as the wave progressed; and the white has tiny up/down swoops in it which you can't see.
Can you see where the two chevron fabric pieces were joined?  It's pretty hard to find it!  This high-quality flannel from Riley Blake was printed so perfectly on excellent fabric that the points met amazingly well.  I pinned the two pieces together at every zig zag and had no problems whatsoever.

Granny Squares Quilt from s.o.t.a.k handmade

Today's feature is from Svetlana of s.o.t.a.k handmade and I am convinced!  I've seen these Granny Squares quilts everywhere and been tempted, but she may have pushed me over the edge!  I love how bright and cheery her finish is.  Love all the colors she uses too.  She's already busted out a 2nd Granny Squares Quilt!  Check out her great quilt finishes , other projects and tutorials for some inspiration.  Thanks for sharing Svetlana!


I am so excited to be able to show you my finished Granny Square quilt. Isn't she a beauty? Just the way I like my quilts, bright, colorful, and cheery.

It was, of course, inspired by Jolene's fantastic Granny Square quilt. I was able to use up lots of my scraps, I only had one rule for the fabric to get into this quilt - I had to love it. This was the first block I made and it still is my favorite. Adore those little owls. 

I decided to use Anna Maria Horner's voile for the back of the quilt. I've heard so many great things about  voile, it was time to give it a try.

What I did not know, however, was that voile did not stick to the batting when I tried to spray baste my quilt. Noooooooooo!!!! Seriously, that was a major setback. The thing is, I am horrible at pin basting. I thought about using some other fabric for the backing, but at the end I went with the original plan and pin basted just the back of the quilt (the top was spray basted). I know, does not make much sense, right? I ended up with pins on the back side of the quilt. I wanted to hand quilt around the squares anyway, so I just took out the pins as I went. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I actually enjoyed hand quilting.

I used my trusty black and white stripe fabric to bind the quilt. I think it frames all those happy squares rather nicely. 

So, there you have it. My Granny Square, all finished , washed, and dried, ready to be snuggled under.

Cara from Me? A Mom? Is a funny blogger girl. She makes me laugh. Cara has three little daughters and enjoys quilting and blogging about both. I know the Grandmas (and perhaps others) are none too pleased at the shift in the content of this blog. Maybe you miss all the talk about my boobs or all the alcohol-related activities I did with the kids, or what about when Lila was waking up at 4 a.m. each morning? That was fun, wasn't it?Oh I kid.

Truth be told, I often always feel guilty when I pick writing about my hobby over writing about the kids. But hold tight. Posts are coming. I just need to get my mommy-writing mojo back.

In the meantime, indulge me as I share another quilt finish.

Remember this stack of fabric?  It's been through a lot.

It was the beginning of a quilt I started in February that I wanted to hang in my office at work. I cut out 304 pieces of fabric for a pattern before realizing a math error. I bemoaned about that here if you care to relive the pain with me.

I then experimented with my miscut fabric scraps and ended up with this wall hanging before finally committing to making a quilt 100% inspired bythis one. I mean, let's face it, it's basically a duplicate. Sorry, Susan. I guess I just loved yours too much. 

So now six months later -- yes, six months back to work, can you believe it? -- I can finally say that I have this quilt finished and hanging in my office.

Ta da. 

 

It's on the wall directly across from my desk. At the risk of sounding completely narcissistic, I love looking at it.    

I originally started to stipple it. I got about a third of the way done before I realized I wanted a more modern quilting effect. So I unpicked all the quilting and started over. It was worth it. I am really pleased with the random straight (and not so straight) quilting lines.  

And keeping with the trend of doing everything more than once, I decided to take out all the basting pins and used 505 basting spray instead. Can I just say that I'm completely hooked on this stuff? It's not smelly, it's easy to use, and it works so much better than safety pins (for me at least).  

Would I ever do this wonky strip patter again? No. Never. It was a pain in the butt to keep wonky yet controllable enough to stay somewhat square (know what I mean?). But I sure am glad I stuck with it.

This is the reason that I go to my Mom's house all the time to craft! Seriously this view looks photoshopped! She lives about 20 minutes away, and she is a super clean freak. Plus she loves to take care of us, feed us, sew for us. We couldn't ask for a better mother or a better location for her to build a gorgeous house!

Last time Megan was out here we sewed and sewed. We created this quilt for our super cute niece who just turned 20! We thought it would be a fabulous quilt for college. She loves it!

We did super soft minky for the backing. Just so nice to snug up in, especially since our darling niece lives in a nice winter town. Our wonderful Aunt did the quilting.  The quilt was a total collaborative effort, Megan and I each did half the blocks and our mom pieced the top :)  We just looooved some of the prints of Peacock Lane, it is perfect to fussy cut.

Our Mom doesn't like the quilt!  She thinks we went a little out of control with the colors, that we should have been so much more unified. I was a little surprised just how open she was about not liking it! She is a little old school about color combination. Bless her heart!

Fresh Lemon Quilts Kaleidoscopic Kites quilt...

Faith from Fresh Lemon Quilts made up this darling colorful quilt and we just loved it. The colors really pop! Plus, she offers it as a free pattern on her blog here. How awesome is that?  We love her colorful blog, she has some amazing projects and patterns. Go check her out! Thanks Faith!

I am very excited to have this latest quilt finished to share with you. I plannedthis one last month and instantly knew this would be a great choice as my second free quilt pattern to offer on my blog.

It really is a rainbow of color. Although my 4 year old is quite disturbed that I did not include purple. Honestly I just don’t have a lot of purple fabric. No fear, you can always replace the brown with purple if you’d like.

This is a great quilt for beginners. The cutting is easy. Each block only has 4 pieces so they go together rather quickly, especially if you are chain piecing. I used a variety of fabrics from my stash in order to have a scrappy look, but I think this pattern would look just as nice with solids, or all fabrics from one collection such as Denyse Schmidt’s Katie Jump Rope.

The backing is my new favorite style of giant randomly placed blocks of fabric. I dug into my out of print fabric stash that I have been hanging on to – it felt good to really use it in large chunks. Kind of like spring cleaning for the fabric soul. The binding is an old print from Anna Maria Horner’s Garden Party line. This was the only print I had from the line and have been wondering what to do with it for awhile now, so again, it was good to see it in action. I quilted this one free motion style. The final size is about 63″ x 72″. It will be listed in the shop shortly.

I am finalizing the graphics and details for the pattern for this one and will post it probably no later than tomorrow! I hope you will come back and make one yourself.
