Diamond Drop pattern....

Yay! I have a new quilt finished!  This fall has really been tough on Meg and I. Megan with her move, and my kids and their overloaded fall schedules has been really kickin my butt lately. I love to sneak in some sewing time when I can. It is my stress reliever!

Baby Gown Tutorial

I never had any baby gowns for my boys, strange I know because so many mommy's swear by them! I'm so excited to have some for my newborn.  So far I love them and haven't even experienced the convenience!  The sweet knits I used in the gown above are The Sweetest Thing from Riley Blake.  It is a really breathable knit with great stretch.  So easy to make, want to know how?

Let's get going!

Materials Needed:
Onesie (it would be great to recycle some old stained ones)
1/2 yard of fabric or fat quarter (knit is best but you can use a cotton print too, I did both)
14" elastic OR 22" ribbon depending on how you want it to tie at the bottom
Extra ribbon for bows or trim

***measurements are given for a newborn size onesie, you can make small adjustments to the numbers based on your size of onesie***

Figuring Your Numbers

Determine if you would like to gather your onesie or have it pleated in the front.  My onesie is 14" around the chest.  For the gather I added 1" for seam allowance and 21" for a gather, total 22" wide.  The gather is 1.5 times your measurement, 14 inches here.  For a pleated front add 1" seam allowance, 4" for pleats, total 17" wide.  Cut your knit or cotton fabric to 22" length. Here's a little formula:

Pleated Front: chest measurement + 1" (seam allowance) + 4" (pleats)= width of cut x 22"
Gathered Front: chest measurement + 1" (seam allowance) + 1.5 times (gather)= width of cut x 22"

Measure and trim off 1.5" below the armpit on the onesie.

Use 1/2" seams.

Attaching the Onesie

This step is only if you want to tie the bottom with a ribbon, skip if you're using elastic:  Fold the gown fabric right sides together.  From the bottom measure up 2 1/4".  Mark on the gown at 1 1/4" and 2 1/4".  You will not sew in-between this 1" mark.  This is how you leave an opening for the ribbon.  (I forgot this step that's why mine is sewn in the photo, I just unpicked it :)

This step is for both types of bottoms, ribbons or elastic.  Take the gown fabric and place right sides together so it creates a tube.  Sew the length of it, press and turn right sides out.

To gather, use the widest stitch on your machine, sew around the top where you will attach it to the onesie.  Slightly pull and gather until it fits the width of your onesie.  With onesie and gown right sides together pin in place. 

To pleat, refer to images below.  Find where the center will be on the front of the onesie, measure out 1.5" on each side and turn fabric in on itself 1/2".  With onesie and gown right sides together, pin in place taking care to match up the centers.  

Sew onesie and gown together.  Press the seam down towards the onesie.

Finishing the Bottom With a Ribbon Tie see below for elastic finish

Back to the bottom.  Press the bottom of the gown 1/4" on itself.

Next fold and press 1" up, pin in place and sew around the entire bottom.  Your opening will be on the front of the gown, the 1" section you left un-sewn at the beginning.

See?  Nice and pretty opening.  Feed your ribbon through.  Done!

Finish the Bottom with Elastic

Fold and press the bottom of the gown 1/4" up.

Fold and press the bottom up again, using the width of your elastic to determine how much.  I used 3/8" wide elastic so I made the casing about 5/8".

Sew around the bottom leaving about an inch open to feed your elastic through.  Feed through, attach the elastic ends with a tight zig-zag, sew the opening closed.

Finishing!

Add any cute little embellishments!  I added this sweet trim to one, love it :)  I only added it to the front because it didn't have any stretch.

PS...I used the B&W damask for Lucy's take home outfit!!  Sweet right?  I can say now that I've used them I definitely prefer the thinner stretchier knits for the gowns.  From the prints in this post it's definitely the Riley Blake knits.

Fabric Tuesday!  And selfishly I'm sharing again!  I've remade our popular Oh Baby! pattern in one of Riley Blake's newest lines, oh goodness.  It is so so so sweet, I'm in love!

This fabric line is just now available, it's called The Simple Life by tasha noel for Riley Blake designs.  I haven't seen it in my LQS quite yet.  There's a blue, pink and white colorway.  The main print with the sheep on the quilts, girls reading a book, picking from the apple tree...swooning!!  I knew I would love that for sure, but the small vintage flowers?! (Seen here on the car seat canopy trim and large ball)  I am stocking up, I already used what I had.  They are the daintiest prettiest flowers.

Sometimes when I make these toys I add tags, no tags, sometimes I just stuff them and sometimes I add these cat toys.  Have you seen that before?  It's genius whoever thought of it.  It makes the perfect little baby noises.

I added the pink floral border on this canopy and used it for the straps as well.  On the inside lining I used the cute bunting print.  I like using just cotton prints on the canopy because it just seems so breathable and light.  Especially in Arizona where our winters are many people's summers!!

Fabric Tuesday!

Welcome to Fabric Tuesday!  The day of week around here where we share the fabric projects we've been working on.  This week I have something to share..and it IS NOT something for my baby girl!  Shocking I know! :)

A while ago I made this chevron bag for a friends birthday.  I had a few cuts of the chevron in different colors and had plans for all of them!  I'm happy to say I've made 3 of the 4 bags.  The one I haven't made is the one for me of course!

I really really love this color combo.  The chevron's are from Riley Blake (I know several of our sponsor carry them) and I know that they have a variety of chevron's coming out, big, medium, small...the blue is a Kona solid and the matching dots inside are from Michael Miller!  I really wanted this one for myself...like kept trying to justify it, but I really thought it was too perfect for my friends birthday so I decided to give it to her.  Boo. :)

And I made up the gray chevron with a fabulous Michael Miller green solid (seen in this post) but I didn't take pics of the bag! I was rushing to get it to my niece for her graduation.  But I'm happy to report when she came to visit me a few weeks later she had brought it along and it was filled with books :)

And another un-related fabric project I made this blanket for another one of my besties.  Her sweet baby Mason got a cochlear implant last week and I just thought having the softy minky to snuggle would be so nice!  So the softness is for him, his name and the cute fabrics are for me and his mom! :)

The minky is from Shannon Fabrics, a Robert Kaufman design.  If you haven't checked out some of this seriously amazing quality of designer minky I challenge you to...it doesn't even compare to Joann's...and I hate to say that because I am NOT a Joann-hater at all.  I go almost weekly. And I have used their minky.  But when you can and for those extra special projects, you really should try out Shannon Fabrics (they carry lots of designers, but it is all top quality).  A lot of our sponsors on the side carry their minky too :)

 Okay, tell me I am  not the only one who has done this...I told my husband I don't neednew matchy matchy outfits for all the 5 kids this Easter, I love doing it, but it adds up, and nobody needs new clothes. But I really wanted this super cute outfit fit for my little man Moosehead. Then on Friday (2 days before Easter) I decided that I desperately did want them to be matchy matchy on Easter, at least coordinate. I didn't want to spend much money though, plus I already made a deal with my husband.  I rushed to Material Girls (my LQS) and bought a few adorable prints to make my oldest and youngest girls some Easter clothes. (The other 2 girls I just pulled from their closets)

I followed this tutorial. Turns out you need to be exactly this girls size to make this, or be smart enough beforehand to figure that even though you can tie the top, if it is to big (which it was) it wouldn't really work properly, all twisted in back, and bunched up skirt that didn't lay nice. I tried to tweak it and make it work, but in the end, 3 hours before church on Sunday, I basically restarted. I love how it turned out, even though it was still to big for her....

I followed this tutorial I found on pinterest. Using some darling Heather Bailey, ruby for sleeves, and woodland tails for the main body. LOVE it!  I already had the woodland tails from this gorgeous pile of fabric I got in the mailbox a week ago from intrepid thread. This is my favorite Riley Blake line right now, freakin' cute!

 And this is how darling they all turned out!  Cute kids huh?  Ahh they make my heart pitter patter...

And I may blow this photo up really large for my entry, the one I have now only has the three oldest girls, pathetic I know!   What do you think?

Look what Megan and I got...

Okay, this made us giddy. (lots of things make us giddy when we are together and Megan has been in town for over a week, and has over a week more!)  First I apologize for the photos, we have to craft late (due to the miniature humans that live with us and demand our attention) thus, no natural light...  Anywho...

Our first shopping stop was The Material Girls Quilts in South Jordan Utah. We LOVE the owner Nadine. She gave us our start in selling patterns. She told us she would buy them before we even made any! She just gives us confidence boosts all the time. She also gave us the NICEST letter of recommendation to get into Quilt Market... Plus she is super funny and fun to be around.

So we saw this intriguing little brown bag gem in the corner of her shop. I had seen them before but never purchased any because I was scared it would be scraps from the bolts that never sold due to their ugliness. But with Megan there and her encouragement, we decided to go for it. 

When we opened it we were giggling so hard. We were super happy! We want more of them!  Look at all these fun prints! There were only a few prints we didn't like which we will tie in a cute bow and give our Mother for her birthday...so nothing lost there.

There is enough Riley Blake to make a Halloween runner for each of us!

There is probably over 6 yards of fabric in here!  Hopefully you will see some finished projects with these prints in them sometime soon.  Thanks Nadine!
