Posy Quilt from Making Life Prettier

I love today's sweet feature!! I grew up sewing with my Mom but I swore I wouldn't sew after I moved

out. Although sewing came back into my life when I became a Mom. I

then somehow decided I would start quilting. I hadn't ever made a

quilt before two and a half years ago. (My Mom is a bridal seamstress

I grew up working on wedding dresses.) I have learned a lot from

quilting blogs and books although there are lots of techniques for me

to still learn. I am glad that there is such a wonderful community of

quilters out there that are willing to share information and support

newbies like me!  I love making quilts so those around me so they can

be surrounded by my love! Creating is just part of me I guess even

though I tried to drown it once upon a time. Anyhow here is my two

year daughters quilt. I hope you love it as much as she does!

It has been a quilt top for a while but over the weekend I finished this sweet quilt up! Miss E’s posy quilt or as she calls it her bunny blanket is all ready to cuddle with. She is willing to share pictures of it but don’t you even think about touching it…

This quilt is made with a pattern by Allison over at Cluck Cluck Sew called Inside Out. I modified it slightly by adding the left over pieces from the charm squares as a border and put the middle plus print at the ends instead of making them scrappy. The fabric is Posy by Aneela Hoey. I used charm packs and some bunny yardage for the inside pluses!

It is her bunny blanket because she LOVES bunnies! She tries to count all the little bunnies running in the pluses. I decided to use a print instead of a solid like the pattern suggests. It makes it busier but I wanted to feature those darling bunnies! (Although lately she says elephants are her favorite, silly girl)

I am also proud to announce that I actually free motioned a quilt! I did loops with my trusty Aurifil thread plus my gardening atlas grip gloves. (Thanks Cathy for the tip!) It is the only free motioning I know how to do, lol, I need more practice! You might ask if it was tricky with the minky backing. It wasn’t but I have to say it is because of the spray basting.(I used 505 spray adhesive) I would never attempt this with pins. Minky just stretches and pulls too much but she won’t sleep without a soft blanket. It washed up so nicely! Perfect for snuggling!

This quilt is bound with a crosshatch print from Blooms and Bursts by Jen Da Silva that I found at a local quilt store. All put together makes a happy little girl…

…and a cute bed! All ready to sleep. If you are wondering this is a Ikea adjustable bed at the smallest setting. The quilt fits pretty well just a little bit too narrow that doesn’t really matter though.

With the added borders the quilt measures at approx. 38” by 43 1/2”. Now to maybe finish up my last WiP before we move! Fingers crossed!

Garden Steps Quilt from Clover and Violet

The gorgeousness of this quilt is almost too much, it makes me so happy!!  So girly and pretty.  And when you read/look closer you'll see it is also embroidered.  It's from the Garden Steps Stitch & Quilt Along at Clover & Violet.  So darling right??  Jennie and Clara (mother-daughter duo) have some amazing projects they are always sharing and teaching like this darling Lone Quilt Block Pillow tutorial.  For all things inspiring like quilting, stitching and sewing you must add Clover & Violet to your list :)

My Garden Steps Stitch & Quilt Along!We are having nice weather here which made a good day for taking photos outdoors. I am glad to have another quilt finished, even quilted and bound. I had help finishing this quilt. Kathy from Stitch by Stitch, quilted it for me and I love the way it turned out!! Thank you Kathy, she is great to work with and does such nice quilting!!

She used a very light aqua thread to quilt it, it is a little out of my comfort zone but I took some advice and I think it works well because of all the aqua in the front and the back.

I am very happy that I used this blue Domestic Bliss for the backing!! Isn’t the back pretty with the floral quilting in an all over pattern!

Birthday String Quilt from So Sarah Sews

Well, I'm moving to London, England in 6 short months.  And I've made a quilt for all my young nieces and nephews...the ones that have been born in the last few years.  But my goal for this year was to give my older nieces and nephews a quilt before I leave.

I took care of Grant, whose birthday was in December, with this camoflage quilt.

Next up is my oldest niece, Brooke.  Her birthday is 4 days after mine in February, and I'm happy to say I'm already done with her quilt!  (Only two more to go after her!)

 

Here it is.  She's going to be 15 this year.  I can't believe it.  I think this will suit her.  She told me she likes all these colors, but no yellow, which is funny because her room is yellow.

This is an up-close of the quilting. I did big flowers throughout the quilt. I like it. (Don't mind the string hanging off there...don't know how I missed that!)

The back is one fabric I chose that I thought she would like. The colors in the pic are a little off, but it's really nice in person. I hope she likes it!

I had a lot of little triangles left over when I trimmed the blocks.  I made a baby quilt with them, you can check it out here. 

I'll soon be sharing with you my newest nephew's quilt (See HERE) that will be on it's way to him soon. (He was born 12-12-12! How cool is that birthday?!)

On Mother's Day (and my birthday) I like to just sew whatever I want for fun.  And it usually means starting a new project, and often a project with no real purpose!  Ha!  And so this Mother's Day was the same, I decided I wanted to put together a simple and modern flying geese quilt.

Mostly the quilt's fabrics are Outfoxed by Lizzy House.  There is also one print (I think) of Joel Dewberry's Heirloom (love love this line more and more everyday, I use it so much!!).

Again this was a fun color departure for me. I love all colors, I just really love color.  But like I've said many times, I lean way more towards blues and greens.  So purples, pinks and oranges so different for me and exciting :)  I've been very mindful of this and when choosing new fabrics for my stash and I really try to be more diverse!

When and how this will be quilted?  TBD.  I've looked around for some quilting ideas, I'll keep it simple, probably following the peaks of the geese, just working out exactly how I'll do it.  When this will happen....? :)  The finished size is about 43" x 50".

Do you remember this little stack of lovely prints from Saffron Craig?  The prints are called Magical Land in pinks.  (PS Check out her darling new line, Wombat Wonderland, love!)

And a finish!  I told you you'd be seeing a lot of finishes from us lately, just this week Dottie, then Sail Away Skirt and now:

Be Mine!

Can you guess why I named it that?  ;)  I wouldn't say that pinks/reds are out of my comfort zone because I LOVE color.  So I guess neutrals would be out of my comfort zone or something :)  But I always always gravitate to blues and greens.  Even if it has red or pink or purple in it  I always think, "You know what would look lovely with this...a blue (or green)!"  Lol.

So for me it is so striking!  And so different, I love seeing it hang over my quilt rack.

The pattern I used was pretty simple (just one I came up with, I didn't use an actual pattern).  I used coordinating Michael Miller solids.  And they matched perfectly.  And if you haven't seen/used MM solids yet I've heard a little misconception out there, that the solids just match their lines.  Which may be true but I use their solids ALL THE TIME, there are sooo many colors, they definitely work outside their lines as well.

I went for a super scrappy back which I think works for this line really well.

I have to tell you, the size of the quilt directly correlates to the look on my husbands face when I ask him to squat for pictures.  Yesterday it was overcast (in hot AZ) and I asked him to help me take some pictures.  We had 3 quilts to do, and they started out his height down to a baby quilt.  This one was in the middle.  Ahh...so funny, I didn't know how put out a grown man can get :) 

The quilt is roughly 40 x 50, a throw or child size.

And the quilting.  Oh the quilting.  Aunt Wendy is amazing (she's in Utah if anyone wants her info).  Like I've been saying, with baby girl coming in October I've got so many projects I've been finishing up lately I've just been saying "One for me, one for Wendy, one for me, one for Wendy...".

There you have it ! My pretty in pinks, reds and purples Be Mine quilt.  I think it might look really cute with a little princess in the middle of it :)

Patchwork Chevron from Knotted-Thread

Well, according to me at least, you can't go wrong with anything chevron!  Hey that kinda rhymes :)  Jennifer from the Knotted-Thread has a fabulous patchwork chevron finish that we're featuring today.  Love it. Jennifer works with kids and enjoys quilting in her free time.  Check out her 2011 finishes and 2012 finishes for some cute quilts!

As some of you may remember I fell in love with the patchwork chevron here
but did not have 4 charm packs to work with so I modified it work with 2 packs.
My process is explained in the previous post

I went with a simple chevron quilting in the solid spaces

I used two of the prints from "Good Fortune" for the backing as well as some 

Kona Medium Gray and a piece of Stars in Shade from the new "Quilt Blocks" line in periwinkle

2 Quilts for 2 Girls from a quilt is nice

Super sweet quilts and sweet stories from Nettie of a quilt is nice.  Nettie is a stay at home mommy of three cuties and has been quilting for 10 years.  She has a finished quilts list that most quilters (especially me!) would be covetous of!! :)  Hard to pick a favorite but this crazy geese quilt is definitely at the top!  Also see Nettie's tutorials for some great quilting tips too!  Thanks Nette!

 

My oldest daughter is 7 years old, and just before she was born I made her this baby quilt.  She LOVED that thing (still does).  It went everywhere with us, church, grocery store, airplanes, bed.  It was her number one comfort item.  Over the years it has suffered from wear, and eventually she didn't "need" it as much.  But it was still always in bed with her. 

Fast forward 5 or so years and my 2 year old discovered how soft and cuddly it is, and pretty much stole it from her big sister.  Luckily she just likes it for sleeping, but it has always bugged her older sister.  I haven't been super fond of it either.  It's pretty ragged, and I don't want to see it completely wear out.

One day, my 7 year old suggested I make a new one for my 2 year old.  I thought that sounded like a fair plan, so we went to work making a new one for Christmas.  At first I wanted to make it as close to exact as I could, but decided I didn't want to buy any fabric for this project, so really only the pattern is the same.

I kept warning my 7 year old that this might not work.  Her sister might not care for a new, crispy quilt.  She might just want her older sisters quilt that is broken in and soft.

But you know what, it worked.  My 2 year old loves her new quilt and was even willing to give back the old one!  Yay!

I love both of these quilts, they seem so sentimental to me.  I keep wondering if I'll have to make another version for our next baby.
